What are Greynet applications?
According to Wikipedia, Greynet applications are defined as:
Within the context of corporate and organizational networks, a greynet is an elusive networked computer application that is downloaded and installed on end user systems without express permission from network administrators and often without awareness or cognition that it is deeply embedded in the organization’s network fabric. These applications may be of some marginal use to the user, but inevitably consume system and network resources. In addition, greynet applications often open the door for end use systems to become compromised by additional applications, security risks and malware.
How Samanage detects greynet software?
Samanage is using a comprehensive dictionary of software titles to scan through your inventory and detect potential greynet applications installed on your computers. Whether its a game, file-sharing application or any other applications that don’t belong in a business environment, Samanage will detect them and alert you of their existence so you could take action to resolve these risks before they impact your network performance or resources.
When Samanage detects a greynet application a new risk entry is created with the details on the application at fault and a list of the computers running that application. The system administrator can review the risk, take action and remove the application or choose to discard the risk or all greynet risks. Samanage will follow up on all open risks automatically, and when the greynet application is removed the risk will be marked as resolved and removed from the active risks section.
Keep your business network secure
Greynet applications do not belong in a business environment and might expose your network to the following risks:
- Greynet might introduce viruses, trojan horses, password loggers to your network.
- Greynet might cause a security breach and allow access to an unwelcome visitor.
- Games and many other greynet applications present a productivity loss.
- Greynet are wasting computing resources (such as local storage and internet bandwidth).
